Greg Glassman and Jennifer Powers opened Zel's Del Mar in 2009. The restaurant was named in honor of Greg's grandfather, Zelig "Zel" Camiel, who had a significant history in Del Mar. Zel Camiel's journey began in 1926 when he left Poland for America, eventually settling in San Diego after a circuitous path through Cuba, various parts of Latin America, and Tijuana. He became a local legend, starting with a liquor store in what is now Del Mar Plaza, and was affectionately known as the "Mayor of Del Mar" upon his retirement, a title reflecting his deep community ties.
In their announcement, Greg and Jenn expressed their gratitude towards their staff, past and present, acknowledging them as the backbone of Zel's. "Each and every one of you, no matter your role, has truly been the backbone of Zel's," they wrote, highlighting the camaraderie and shared experiences over the years. They also extended thanks to the musicians who contributed to the unique atmosphere of the venue, saying, "What an amazing group of talented people. You've helped shape the unique vibe of our space, and we're incredibly grateful for your contributions."
The owners also took a moment to thank their patrons, the lifeblood of the establishment. "Over the past 15 years, we've loved getting to know you, hearing your stories, and watching your families grow," they shared, underscoring the deep personal connections formed over the years. They emphasized that this decision was not made lightly, stating, "Please know that this decision was not made lightly. It's been a bittersweet one, but we feel it is the right time for us and for our families."
Zel's Del Mar has been more than just a place to eat and drink; it was a community hub where locals met, socialized, and enjoyed live music. Greg and Jenn described it as "exactly the type of place that Greg and I love to frequent and brings us joy that we have been able to bring that into the community." Unique offerings like Greg's curated selection of tequila, mezcal, and bourbon, and Jenn's beloved Grilled Cheese Monday nights, have been signature attractions.
Despite the closure, there is optimism about the future of the location. "Though Zel's Del Mar will be closing its doors, this corner of Del Mar will continue to be a special place," the announcement read. Greg and Jenn expressed confidence that the new owners would maintain the spirit of community that Zel's fostered. "We are excited about what the future holds and are confident that the new owners will continue to keep the spirit of community alive in this beloved spot."Ìý

In an interview from December 2021, Jenn shared a fun fact about the building, which was originally the Pacific Bell Phone Company, with some of the old phone lines still hidden in her office, adding a touch of historical charm to the venue. There is no word yet on who the new owners of the space will be or what they plan on doing with it.Ìý
