San Diego To Get First Adults-Only Oceanfront Resort, Marking A New Era Of Luxury By The Sea

A notable shift is on the horizon for one of San Diego's premier hotels, as it prepares to redefine luxury hospitality in the region by becoming the first adults-only oceanfront resort.Ìý

"Beginning February 14, 2025, Alila Marea plans to transition to an adults-only resort, welcoming guests aged 18 and over," reads the resort's website. "This transition allows us to provide a serene and tranquil environment tailored to adult travelers seeking relaxation, exploration, and a peaceful stay by the beach."

Alila Marea Beach Resort in Encinitas is set to become San Diego's first, exclusively adults-only hotel property located outside a Native American reservation. While accommodations will be restricted to adults, dining at the resort will remain open to minors, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the culinary offerings. This transition to an adults-only policy marks a new chapter for Alila Marea, promising a refined and tranquil experience for those seeking the ultimate beach getaway in San Diego.

Developed by JMI Realty and Fenway Capital Advisors, this resort is a part of Hyatt Hotels' expanding Alila brand, joining the ranks with Ventana Big Sur as the second Alila property in California and the United States. The Alila brand is known for its luxury hotels and resorts in unique locations, emphasizing innovative eco-design, sustainability, and intimate destination experiences.
Perched on coastal bluffs with breathtaking views over Grandview and South Ponto Beaches, Alila Marea Beach Resort Encinitas spans 226,000 square feet and offers 130 guest rooms, including 16 suites. The resort's concept was initially proposed in 1989 under the name Encinitas Beach Hotel, intended as a companion to La Costa Resort & Spa. Construction began in January 2019.Ìý

However, the development has not been without controversy. Several months after groundbreaking, nearby bluffs collapsed, tragically resulting in the deaths of three individuals. This incident has led to a with the city of Encinitas and coastal property owners, raising questions about the impact of construction on the stability of the local landscape.

Since opening in early 2021, Alila Marea Beach Resort has introduced amenities like an ocean-view restaurant with a rooftop patio, a pool area complete with a bar and an infinity-edge hot tub, the Spa Alila, and expansive event venues with panoramic ocean and lagoon views. The design, crafted by San Diego-based Joseph Wong Design Associates with interiors by Mark Zeff Associates, integrates the resort into the natural bluff landscape using local materials and native flora, embodying the Alila brand's commitment to eco-design. The resort's name, "Marea," which means "tide" in Italian and Spanish, reflects its aim to encapsulate the essence of Southern California's beach culture.
