The Hillcrest Farmers Market is gearing up for a yearlong relocation starting this Sunday to accommodate the construction of the Normal Street Promenade.ÌýFirst established on April 13, 1997, with just 27 vendors, the Hillcrest Farmers Market has grown into San Diego's largest and oldest farmers market, usually hosting over 175 vendors and attracting more than 10,000 weekly visitors. Its regular location at the DMV on Normal Street has served as a vibrant gathering spot for fresh produce, artisan goods, and a bustling community atmosphere for nearly three decades.
The upcoming relocation to University Avenue, between Herbert Street and Park Boulevard, will enable the market to operate during the approximately year-long construction of the Normal Street Promenade. However, this temporary move has allegedly led to the recent elimination of some vendors, even though the new footprint is larger than the previous location. Market organizers have blamed these allegations are false.
"No vendors will be cut for space reasons," explained a representative of the Hillcrest Farmers Market. "We routinely rotate vendors to keep the market fresh and exciting; however, we expect the same number of vendors as at our old location."
Market organizers aim to ensure the new location maintains the lively atmosphere and diverse offerings that have made the Hillcrest Farmers Market a beloved Sunday tradition. The market will continue to operate rain or shine every Sunday from 9am to 2pm, with parking still available at the DMV.The Normal Street Promenade project, which necessitated the move, is being heralded as a transformative development for the market and the Hillcrest community. When completed, the promenade will offer a permanent, purpose-built home for the farmers market, eliminating the need for street closures while creating a dedicated park-like environment designed to enhance the experience for both vendors and visitors. It promises to increase visibility, foster a stronger sense of community, and provide a long-term solution for this iconic event.
"Hillcrest Farmers Market has always been more than just a market - it’s a community hub where neighbors connect and local businesses thrive," said Mark Larson, Hillcrest Farmers Market Manager. "This move to a temporary location is an important step toward an incredible future."
