Bootlegger Sports Bar Closing After 13 Years In San Diego's East Village

Bootlegger sports bar and tavern in San Diego's East Village is gearing up to shut its doors after 13 years of serving the local community.Ìý

FoundersÌýRussell Hampton, Hoffman Leung, Brendan Huffman and Mark Huber initially envisioned Bootlegger as a "local watering hole" for downtown residents, offering comfort, community, and an escape from the corporate bar scene. The bar's design, with its rusted chains, corrugated metal awnings, and a laid-back vibe, resonated with patrons, many of whom described it as a little slice of home. Known for its welcoming atmosphere, constant dedication to sports, and nostalgic charm, Bootlegger has been a staple for residents and visitors alike since its opening in 2011.

Reflecting on the closure, Mark Huber shared, "Friday and Saturday night next week, January 24-25, 2025, will be the last big dance. The future of the space isn't clear yet, but I’m hoping something really cool happens. That whole area is turning over. Hopefully, the next iteration of that space brings back the life to East Village it used to provide. It's the proper end to amazing story and the start of something new for everyone involved. On behalf of everyone in the Bootlegger family past and present, thank you East Village and the greater San Diego community for all the love, support and great memories we shared together over the years."

Since its inception, Bootlegger has not only weathered the challenges of the hospitality industry but also thrived, becoming the foundation of Social Syndicate, the hospitality group grown by Huffman and Huber. Social Syndicate has expanded to include numerous popular venues across San Diego, such as Wonderland Ocean Pub in Ocean Beach, The Local in Pacific Beach, and The Rabbit Hole in Normal Heights.

While Bootlegger’s closure marks the end of an era, it also reflects the changing landscape of San Diego's East Village. The area has seen notable turnover in recent years, including the departure of Basic Pizza and ongoing shifts at other local establishments. Bootlegger fans can look forward to celebrating its legacy during its final weekend, January 24-25, 2025.Ìý
