Founded in 1995 by Momoko Jackson and her late husband Bruce, World Curry was born out of the couple's travels through Thailand, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Inspired by the rich flavors they encountered, they set out to bring global curry styles to Bruce's hometown of San Diego. The result was a casual, welcoming space where locals could experience the vibrant tastes of curries from cultures far and wide.
Although the Jacksons did not come from a formal culinary background, their passion for food and curry set World Curry apart. Bruce, in particular, was known for his skill in reinterpreting traditional curry recipes, making them approachable and delicious for all palates. His dishes struck a balance between authenticity and accessibility, offering options that were flavorful without being overly spicy or intimidating to newcomers.
The menu at World Curry reflected the couple's global influences, featuring curries from Thailand, India, Japan, and other regions. Complementary dishes such as roti, samosas, naan, and yakitori skewers rounded out the offerings. Diners could also customize their spice levels, a hallmark of the restaurant鈥檚 commitment to catering to all tastes.
After Bruce鈥檚 passing in 2022, the restaurant remained a family-run operation, led by their son Max Jackson and Momoko (Momo). In September, the Jackson family made the heartfelt announcement that World Curry would be closing its doors.
"Our final day of operation will be December 22nd, the Sunday before Christmas,鈥� the family shared in a follow-up statement this past November. 鈥淲e want to take this as another opportunity to thank everyone and anyone who has dined in with us. Whether you just discovered us recently or have been a loyal patron throughout our entire near 30-year run, we truly thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
