Operated by Loews Hotels & Co since its opening in 1991, the Loews Coronado Bay ResortÌýis proposing a massive renovation project to modernize its amenities and enhance public access. The renovation will update guest rooms, improve outdoor recreation areas, and replace the temporary event tent with a permanent structure. Public access upgrades include a pedestrian promenade along the bayfront, offering views of downtown San Diego and the Chula Vista Bayfront. The project does not include additional hotel rooms or marina work.
"This is the kind of commitment we like to see from our visitor-serving tenants - reinvesting in their leaseholds to deliver high standards of hospitality while also adding more public access and connectivity along our bayfront," said Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners Chairman Frank Urtasun. "This project as proposed will elevate the guest experience and benefit the community."Ìý
The resort was developed starting in the 1980s by Josef and Lenor Citron and MKK Associates. The 15-acre waterfront property was designed by San Diego architect C.W. Kim and cost $90 million to build. Loews Coronado, built on leased land from the Port of San Diego, has been a part of the area’s hospitality landscape for over three decades. Known for its luxury amenities, the property has contributed to local tourism and economic growth. It was once labeled as a "misbaked, multilayered wedding cake of tan, green and earth-red stucco" .Ìý
"Today marks what Loews Hotels & Co believes to be a significant milestone in the spectacular transformation of the Loews Coronado Bay Resort," said Alex Tisch, President & CEO, Loews Hotels & Co. "After more than three decades of being part of the Greater San Diego hotel skyline, we are excited to work with the Port in negotiating, and hopefully implementing a comprehensive plan to transform the experience. Our plan is to create a best-in-class resort product for residents, guests, corporate groups and our team members to enjoy, amidst one of the most spectacular settings in the United States."Ìý
Environmental review will proceed under the California Environmental Quality Act. Construction timelines are pending approvals. If completed, the project aims to position Loews Coronado Bay Resort as a premier destination while enhancing community access to the waterfront.
