Lucky's story began in 1975 when Chinese immigrant Wong "Lucky" Chong opened Lucky’s Golden Phenix on Grim Avenue in what was then a remote section of San Diego's North Park neighborhood. Initially serving Chinese cuisine, the restaurant transitioned to a simple, no-frills American breakfast menu over the years. Known for its affordable prices and consistent quality, the restaurant became a staple in the neighborhood.
Lucky himself embodied the spirit of the establishment. Having migrated from Taishan, China, to San Diego in 1949 at the age of 11, Lucky spent nearly 50 years running his diner. He was the heart of the business - personally taking orders, cooking meals, and interacting with every customer, often with help from his wife.
In 2022, the restaurant gained viral fame after a highlighting its charm garnered nearly 4 million views. A year later, Lucky listed the business for sale on Craigslist, seeking the "best offer" for the space. Despite this, Lucky continued operating the cash-only eatery until its recent closure.
While no official announcement was made, it is speculated that Lucky retired and plans to lease the space to a new operator. The closure marks the end of an era for the North Park community, where Lucky’s simplicity and personal touch left an indelible mark.
Lucky's Golden Phenix was located at 3804 Grim Avenue in North Park.
