Cocina De Barrio Opens In Former Saiko Sushi Space In San Diego's North Park

Cocina De Barrio, an Oaxaca-inspired Mexican restaurant, has launched its fourth San Diego location in North Park, taking over the space formerly occupied by Saiko Sushi.

In November 2019, Executive Chef and co-owner Jose J. Flores teamed up with Swami's Cafe founder Jaime Osuna to debut the first Cocina De Barrio in Hillcrest. Over the past five years, the restaurant has earned acclaim for its Oaxacan-style menu.

In 2022, a second location opened in Point Loma's Midway area, replacing a Swami's Cafe. Earlier this year, Cocina De Barrio expanded to Encinitas, taking over the former Lumberyard Tavern & Grill. While Jaime Osuna is partners in the Hillcrest, Point Loma and Encinitas locations, the new North Park branch is operated independently by Chef Jose Flores and his wife Karla Ruiz.Ìý

The latest outpost has soft opened in the 3,200-square-foot space that last house Saiko Sushi, which closed earlier this summer after a decade in business. Guests can expect signature offerings such as tlayudas ("Oaxacan pizza"), enfrijoladas (fried tortillas in bean sauce), hand-pressed tacos, tamales, and a variety of moles. The restaurant also features Mexican brunch and a full mezcal bar with cocktails, beer, Micheladas, and wine. Cocina De Barrio continues to bring its authentic flavors to new neighborhoods, cementing its reputation as a go-to destination for Oaxacan cuisine in San Diego.
