Founded by Gerry Torres in 2014, City Tacos has grown into a beloved local brand with eight locations across San Diego. While Torres has launched other concepts in the past, like IB Street Tacos in Imperial Beach, Tortilla N' Taco Factory in El Cajon, Tostadas and La Catrina Tapas & Cantina, both in North Park, none have achieved the same lasting success. His latest endeavor, Tour de Tapas, aims to deliver an elevated experience with a menu of small plates influenced by Italian, French, and Spanish cuisines.
Tour de Tapas offers an eclectic menu designed for sharing. Highlights include dishes such as Heirloom Tomato Caprese Salad and Calamari Fritti from Italy, Moules à la Crème et au Vin Blanc (mussels in creamy white wine sauce) and Soupe à l'Oignon (onion soup) from France, and Pulpo con Chistorra (sautéed Spanish octopus) and Patatas Bravas from Spain. The beverage program complements the menu with a variety of beers, wines, sangria, cider, kombucha, and non-alcoholic options.
Tour de Tapas occupies a site with a storied past. In October 2024, Torres announced plans to partner with Chef Andrew "Drew" Bent to expand Papalo Sonoran Barbecue Kitchen, known for its inventive take on Mexican barbecue. However, the deal fell through, and Papalo closed its La Mesa location soon after. Bent, a celebrated chef with stints at Noma’s Tulum pop-up and Michelin-recognized Lola 55, has announced plans to relaunch Papalo as a pop-up in North Park before seeking a permanent home.
Tour de Tapas marks a new chapter for Torres and his team as they continue to expand their culinary footprint. The new concept blends global flavors with a casual yet sophisticated dining experience, promising to be a standout addition to La Mesa's growing food scene.
