Illinois-Based Jimmy John's Sandwiches To Open First San Diego Location

An Illinois-based sandwich chain with more than 2,500 locations, Jimmy John's will open its first San Diego outpost next year.Ìý

Founded by Jimmy John Liautaud in Charleston, IL, in 1983,ÌýJimmy John's Sandwiches nowÌýhas over 2,700 locations in 43 states around the U.S., with 98% of them being franchises. Jimmy John's menu of signature and customizable sandwiches are made with homemade bread that is freshly baked every four hours and locally purchased veggies and all-natural meats that are hand-sliced daily.

Jimmy John's first San Diego County location will open at the new Paseo Artist Village mixed-use apartment complex in the North County community of Vista. The 1,828 square-foot space will serve Jimmy John's menu of "Freaky Fast" sandwiches, including the Spicy East Coast Italian with double Genoa Salami, double capicola, provolone cheese, hot peppers, sauce, lettuce, tomato, and onion; and the Jimmy Cubano with smoked ham, bacon, provolone, sliced pickle, mayo and dijon mustard.Ìý

Jimmy John's has had a some controversies over the course of its near four decades tenure. In 2011, photos emerged of Jimmy John's founded , including elephants, rhinos, lynxes and zebras, which resulted in viral criticism by animal rights groups.ÌýIn , the U.S. Food and Drug Administration sent an FDA warning letter to the company detailing evidence from five outbreaks of human infections with e-coli. The letter claimed that evidence demonstrated that the company engaged in a pattern of receiving and selling spoiled produce, specifically clover sprouts and cucumbers.Ìý
