After 11 Years In Business, Urban Solace To Reinvent Itself In The New Year | Bar Solace Unveils In 2019

November 8, 2018

Starting next week, North Park's 11-year-old Urban Solace will begin daily breakfast service, but that's just the beginning of the big changes on the horizon. Starting in 2019, the iconic San Diego bar & restaurant will discontinue its usual dinner service and morph evening dining into "Bar Solace", straying away from its Southern comfort food roots and embracing a focus on globally-inspired small bites and shared plates paired with hand crafted cocktails and fine wines.

"For the past 11 years we have had the pleasure of serving you, making friends & fans and establishing our reputation as a neighborhood joint that serves damn tasty food and drinks while offering consistent, authentic service," said Urban Solace owner and Executive Chef Matt Gordon in an email to friends and staff. "We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved however it is time for something new and different. In January of 2019, Urban Solace in the evenings will begin a new cycle of life. Over the past few years we have witnessed first-hand, different desires in what guests like you want and need, neighborhood demographic shifts and increasing demand for a more social dining atmosphere."

Starting on Tuesday, November 13, Urban Solace will begin serving breakfast daily at 8am, debuting an entirely new morning menu including baked sticky buns, orange mascarpone French toast, and chicken fried chicken with grits, as well as a handful of plant based options. The breakfast menu will be broken up into numerous sections, including Toast, Carbs, Healthful, Eggs & Savory, and an Unleaded beverage menu with a variety of soft juices, shakes, cold brews, and coffee drinks. Breakfast and lunch will run from 8 am to 2pm daily, with the restaurant's popular Bluegrass Brunch remaining in effect with live music every Sunday between 10am and 2pm.

Beginning on January 1, 2019, Urban Solace's regular dinner menu and traditional dinner service will cease to exist. The eatery will close for a short period for an interior redesign and once reopened will morph into Bar Solace during evening dining hours, offering a more casual style with a focus on small bites and shared plates designed to pair with the bar's boutique wines and handmade craft cocktails. Expect meat & cheese boards and a constantly evolving array of dishes.Ìý

"Even though we will still draw from our comfort food roots, the flavors will be more international as a reflection of our current and evolved food culture," explained Chef Gordon. "All our Urban Solace classics, like Chicken and Dumplings, Duckaroni, Beef Cheeks, Cheddar-Chive Biscuits and Creamy Tomato-Fennel Soup will only be available through the end of December, so come in a get your last Urban Solace supper before it’s too late! We are extremely excited to begin the next phase of our long and storied time in North Park. Please come enjoy your favorites while they last, and join us in the new year for Bar Solace! And hey, don’t forget the most important meal of the day… and join us for Breakfast starting next week!"

In addition to the above changes, the interior design of Urban Solace will be revamped to compliment the relaxed formality. The restaurant will offer an eclectic array of seating options to make the place more open to social-dining and the shared-plate experience. One question remains - will Anchorman remain a constant behind the bar? Only time will tell.

Urban Solace is located at 3823 30th Street in the heart of San Diego's North Park community. For more information, visit Ìýand check out the new breakfast menu below.
